In 1785 the Journal of a Tour to the Hebrides with Samuel Johnson was published by his friend, Scotsman James Boswell (1740–1795),lxiii on the basis of travel notes taken in the summer and autumn of 1773. The preface contains this declaration by an authentic cosmopolitan who had visited numerous European nations.
I am, I flatter myself, completely a citizen of the world. In my travels through Holland, Germany, Switzerland, Italy, Corsica, France, I never felt myself from home; and I sincerely love ‘every kindred and tongue and people and nation’.
James Boswell, Journal of a Tour to the Hebrides (1785).
