According to those who knew him, Napoleon Bonaparte (1769–1821),lxxvi imprisoned on Saint-Helena, was conscious of having failed in his aim to conquer, but continued to affirm that the future of Europe demanded greater unity.
The impulse has been given, and I do not believe that after my fall and the disappearance of my system there will be any major equilibrium possible in Europe other than by the agglomeration and confederation of the great peoples.
